We have been privileged to work with Mr. Hanru Pienaar over the last two years. He is not only the chairman of our district but is an advisor for plantations as a whole and specifically in our case advise on the value of our pecan farm.
Unfortunately we lost 362 trees as a result of fire in 2012. The fire was a direct result of negligence and the attorneys handling the claim required an accurate estimation of the financial losses. They suggested a loss adjuster with agricultural experience.
It became quite clear with the passage of time that the loss adjuster had undervalued the orchard. The importance of having someone with the knowledge of orchard production; the status of the orchard potential and the monetary value cannot be underestimated.
With this in mind we contacted Mr. Hanru Pienaar, after consulting with SAPPA, who gave the problem his undivided attention. He visited the site, took copious notes on the layout of the orchard including the irrigation systems and soil nutrition and within days compiled a report indicating the true value of our loss. Suffice to say that his estimation differed from the loss adjusted by over 1 million rand.
He was quite happy to appear in the high court at the hearing of the case (Case No. 71017/2012, Gauteng Division, Pretoria) and as time elapsed he met with the opposing attorney’s expert witness. It became apparent that his experience as a pecan farmer was invaluable in the discussion that took place and his first hand knowledge far outstripped the understanding of the opposing expert witness.
Hanru is dedicated to the promotion of the Pecan industry and has a far reaching knowledge, ranging from the planting and establishment of orchards to the detailed market value of the crop. We are indeed fortunate to have contact and affiliation with SAPPA and in particular with Hanru.
